Genèse: The musical is based on the 1964 children's novel, by Roald Dahl. A first reading of the first act from the show was carried out in New York in May 2010, with the intention of opening in London the following year. Officially confirmed on 18 June 2012, producers announced that the show would play the Theatre Royal Drury Lane from May 2013, with tickets going on sale in October 2012. The show is written by playwright David Greig and directed by Sam Mendes, with choreography by Peter Darling, orchestrations by Doug Besterman, set design by Mark Thompson and lighting design by Paul Pyant. An original score has been penned by Marc Shaiman with lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman (Grammy® winners for Hairspray; Smash). The show presents a more contemporary version of the original story. During previews many changes took place, with the main addition to the show being the addition of the Great Glass Elevator. West End (2013) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was expected to begin previews on 17 May 2013, at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London, before holding its official opening gala night on 25 June 2013. The show was originally due to open at the London Palladium. Douglas Hodge was announced to be leading the production in the role of Willy Wonka, with further casting announced on 11 January 2013. Previews of the show were delayed by five days until 22 May, due to "unforeseen problems in the delivery of a piece of stage engineering by a contractor". Following opening night the booking period for the show was extended until 31 May 2014.

Treasured by a generation in Scotland and loved far and wide, Local Hero is one of the defining moments of Scottish storytelling.
Genèse: On 3 February 2018, it was announced the play would receive its world premiere in spring 2019, thirty five years after the original film. It is expected to make its world premiere at the Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh, before transferring to The Old Vic with whom it is a coproduction. Local Hero began previews at the Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh on 14 March 2019, with an official opening night on 23 March, booking for a limited period until 20 April. Due to demand the run was extended until 4 May. Notable casting included Damian Humbley as Mac, Katrina Bryan as Stella, Matthew Pidgeon as Gordon, and Simon Rouse as Happer. The production will transfer to The Old Vic, London where it is scheduled to begin previews 18 June 2020,[20] with an official opening night on 1 July, booking for a limited period until 22 August.

Ambitious Texan oil executive Mac MacIntyre arrives in Scotland on a mission to buy a small seaside village and replace it with a refinery. It’s the deal of a lifetime, but Mac soon finds out that putting a price on this scenic spot is more complicated than he bargained for. Before the locals get rich, they must decide what a village is worth –a Maserati? A million? A marriage? Or is feeling at home worth more than even oil money can buy?
